Discount dental plans can be the most cost effective way to get dental coverage for you and your family. It is certainly worth the few minutes it will take to read this page. You might find that these plans are exactly what you were looking for.

Discount dental plans are not considered insurance products. They are an arrangement where you will receive a reduced or discounted fee for services at a participating dentist. Some plans do include free cleanings, x-rays and other preventive services.

These plans are sometimes the best value in dental coverage. I use one for myself and my family. Of course, the challenge, as with any type of health or dental plan, is to find a participating provider that you like. But, if you do and you do not frequently need a lot of work, they are hard to beat.

Let me list some of the advantages and disadvantages of discount dental plans for you.

  • They are relatively inexpensive. You can find them for as little as $6.95 a month. An entire family can get an excellent plan for about $150 a year.
  • There are no waiting periods and all pre-existing problems are covered.
  • There are dozens of different plans to choose from. Some with large national networks like Cigna and Aetna.
  • There are no plan limits. The discount is for an unlimited amount of work.

  • You must find a participating provider. Your current dentist may not accept the plan.
  • Specialists are usually covered at a flat 20% discount (maybe this should be in the advantage list).
  • Not all parts of the country have provider coverage.
  • You must pay your dentist at time of service, unless other arrangements are made.

How do these plans work?

First of all, you must use a provider that is part of the discount network. We have a lot of different plans and in most parts of the country there is a wide selection of dentists to choose from. It you want to continue using your dentist and they are not part of the network, you will need to use a different type of plan. A low end PPO might do the trick. You can call us and we will find something for you.

You will present your card at your appointment. Unless you have made other arrangements, you will probably have to pay for any services you receive that day.

I do want to caution you that some procedures are not covered. Unless it is a cleaning or routine filling, I would ask my dentist if what they were going to be doing was covered by your plan. If it isn't, don't be shy and ask for a cash discount.

The discounts listed with each plan are for general dentists. If you need to visit a specialist like a periodontist or oral surgeon, you will get a flat 20% discount if they are part of the network.
